There you go again!...

Supervisor Marirose Blum Bump has issued a letter attempting to invalidate the Town Board meeting for Thursday night.  She references Town Law Section 4(3) regarding special meetings.  This law allows the Supervisor to call for a special meeting should one be needed.

The meeting for December 27th was established by a four to one vote of the Town Board during a regularly scheduled public meeting.  Her reference therefore is inaccurate.

Board meetings are established by a majority vote of the Board.  This allows the public to know of the meeting and the democratically elected representatives of the Town to discuss and debate the meeting schedule.  The section of law quoted allows the Supervisor to schedule a "special meeting" without Board action.  Such a meeting might be necessary to address an emergency or some unforeseen need of the community.  This section of law does not, however, negate the Town Board's ability to establish additional meetings by a public vote.

We may not always like or agree with a Board's decision, but the Supervisor is not granted unilateral authority to negate a Board vote.  And thank goodness for that. ¶
